The session will be held in the first floor meeting room and unfortunately has no wheelchair access however a stair lift is available. No parking is available on the grounds of the Almshouses.

Lovell announced as contractor at Dover Court

Islington Council has appointed housing developer Lovell for a £21.8 million regeneration programme which will transform the Dover Court estate in North London with 70 much-needed new high-quality homes and a range of other improvements.

The regeneration programme will create new homes for social rent and homes for sale on council-owned land as well as provide improved open spaces, estates paths, play areas and community facilities.

The new energy-efficient housing – 36 apartments and 34 houses – will be built on nine sites at the estate, including former garages and car parking. The existing Romford House will also be replaced with a new purpose-built development for residents aged over 55. Lovell is set to start work on the three-year construction programme towards the end of 2015.

Fifty-one of the new homes – 25 one-bedroom and nine two-bedroom apartments and 15 three-bedroom and two five-bedroom houses – will be for council rent. Nineteen of the new homes – 17 two-bedroom houses, one one-bedroom and one two-bedroom apartment – will be for sale through the council.

In addition, the scheme, designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards architects and developed in close consultation with estate residents, includes extensive improvements to the estate’s open spaces and community facilities including increased planting and green spaces and the redesign of Mitchison Baxter Park with children’s play areas, new paths, new trees and a replacement ball games space.  A new community room for the use of all estate residents will be created on the ground-floor of the Threadgold House flats.

Islington Council’s executive member for housing and development Cllr James Murray says: “In Islington, like the rest of London, we’re facing a huge housing crisis. We desperately need more genuinely-affordable housing and that’s why we’re building 51 new council homes at Dover Court for local people. Alongside the new homes, the new play areas and green spaces will improve the estate for all its residents.”

The housing is designed to be ‘tenure blind’ so that there is no visual difference between the affordable and open market homes. All homes will meet the standards set out by the London Housing Design Guide and will be built to Lifetime Homes standard, meaning they can be easily adapted as residents’ needs change. The development is also designed to achieve the national Secured by Design accreditation, which means that the creation of a safe and accessible environment has been at the heart of the design process. Eight of the new homes will be accessible for residents who use wheelchairs.

All homes will meet Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, incorporating sustainable, energy-efficient technology designed to keep energy bills down.
