Report on The Garden Classroom’s – Summer on the Green – August 2019
Lovell very kindly contributed £500 towards our Summer on the Green programme which ran on Newington Green over three weeks in July and August this year. Although the weather was more changeable than last year we only had to postpone on one occasion when heavy rain was forecast all day. Apart from that we found that parents/carers dodged the showers and joined us for as long as they could.
We continued with our themed days with each day having a different nature focus. The programme was free and children of any age accompanied by an adult, were welcome to drop in and stay for as long as they liked. The sessions which lasted from 10.00-2.00 were very well attended with an average of 25 children coming along each day accompanied by older siblings and parents or grandparents. The children were evenly split between boys and girls and 0-5 year olds and 6-12 year olds. On the few very hot days the families who came from the adjacent tower blocks were particularly glad to have the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the shade of tree-lined Newington Green. Many of them brought picnic lunches and stayed for the day, making new friends and staying after we had closed for the day.
